Aspheric Lenses

Unlike the singular curve of a regular eyeglass lens, aspheric lenses have many different curves on the front surface of the lens.  Having more than one curve on the front lens surface allows us to make most lenses thinner.
Most often aspheric lenses are used for someone who is moderate to extremely farsighted. Because aspheric lenses are thinner and flatter than a standard eyeglass lens there is less distortion off to the side of the lens, allowing the wearer a greater degree of peripheral vision.  A thinner lens also means less magnification to the wearer, which will result in far less false depth perception and also seeing objects bigger than they really are.
Lots of times we look at people wearing glasses and see these giant eyes behind their glasses, well because aspheric lenses reduce that magnification their eye will now look closer to normal size.
Aspheric lenses are available in single vision, and bifocals. Keep in mind that just because an aspheric lens is flatter and thinner than a conventional lens doesn’t mean frame selection isn’t important. As always the proper frame fit will allow the thinnest, lightest and flattest lenses, even with aspheric lenses.
